Nan Colton is a playwright, director, storyteller, actress and arts educator having performed and lectured professionally on stages throughout South Africa, Great Britain and the United States.
From 1990 -1998 years Nan was founder and Artistic Director of Kestrel Productions - a small, professional theatrical company that presented over 100 productions of vital American theatre and brought Pulitzer winning playwrights to town to share their works with local thespians and audiences.
After 3 years as "Artists in Residence at Eckerd College" the theatre company disbanded and Nan's entrepreneurial spirit created Solo Productions. Now she is committed to create and present theatrical solo performances and workshops that are both interactive and entertaining in museums, art galleries, schools, universities and at conferences.
Nan has been the Performing-Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg for the past 14 years, having researched, produced and performed over 37 vastly different original scripted presentations that explain the art and the exhibitions.
In 2004, her partnership with the Sunshine Senior Center had Nan working with North Shore Elementary School students and local veterans to collect oral histories. This work culminated in a very popular hour TV interview program that is aired frequently on Channel 35 WSPT - TV entitled "Preserving Our Nations Memories". This worthwhile project was funded in part by the Florida Humanities Council and the City of St. Petersburg. Twenty-five local veterans and war workers used this opportunity to finally tell their story. All the oral histories were transcribed and printed with student writings in book publication. The positive relationship with the senior center has grown and together the project Living Memories of St. Petersburg, celebrating the center's thirtieth anniversary was completed in 2008.
Nan has recently completed her fifth "Literacy and Performing Artist in the Schools Residency" for "CLASS ACTS" cultural programming of the Mahaffey Theater Foundation. For the 2006-07 fifth graders she will be basing her workshops on the Martin Luther King speech "I have a Dream" and developing a series of experiences for the students entitled My Dream, My Solution which culminates in a grand finale event when students will publicly receive their published works and make live presentations of their photo journalism.
Throughout the residency the students playfully explore the understanding that a narrow, material world, unlit by imagination, is inadequate to fulfill one's life experiences, much less fulfill one's dreams and hopes.
"A handful of clear images are as good as an armful of arguments, and so I offer you this handful of presentations and lively stories. "
· Nan’s 5 historical character project entitled Upstairs/Downstairs at Tampa Bay Hotel (Henry Plant Museum) has won national recognition with an Award of Merit from the American Association of State and Local History. · It is her commitment to the local community that has won Nan recognition by the Pinellas Arts Council who recently awarded her the prestigious Artist of the Year 2000 - Friends of the Arts Award. · Her work as an arts educator has her giving lectures, workshops and touring presentations to special interested groups, schools and universities, museums and art galleries. |
